The client brief outlined that the renovations had to keep the original integrity of the building, with the existing building envelope and aim to keep the aesthetic of visual heritage.
The Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital Maternity Renovation has been a challenging task for LSA Architects. The hospital was originally erected in 1954 with a structure sent from the United Kingdom.
The interior needed to provide a comfortable and secure environment for patients’ 2-3 day stays and cater for them storage-wise. The nursing station had to be in a central position for both birthing and post natal suites so that the staff could work productively.
LSA Architects also had to take into account that there was to be an upgrade of existing data, electrical, mechanical and hydraulic services. Materials from the original building were recycled in the new renovations where possible, (for example, the reuse of windows). Otherwise, timber, warm white and muted tones were used throughout to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere that will be able to change with the style of the hospital in the years to come.
